Back to the Future Hoax

The correct date – Oct. 21, 2015 – NOT June 27, 2012

Today is NOT the date in the future that Doc Brown and Marty McFly traveled to in Back to the Future Part II. A photo that has been circulated around the internet today is a hoax. The above image is a screenshot from my copy of Back to the Future. The hoax was not even close – the wrong day, wrong month, and wrong year.

Back to the Future DeLorean Restoration

The group restoring the Back to the Future DeLorean have been posting images of the car to Facebook and Twitter. Some of the images are of the DeLorean used during the filming and of the car today. The so called “A” car is what has their interest, as it is the most complete. The project is being directed by BTTF writer Bob Gale. While the car looks fine, it is missing parts and other parts are beginning to fall off. The group plans to restore the car so it can be placed on display, but indoors this time.

Other images presented on the Facebook page are of a replica car built by the restoration team. The replica car shows the team’s attention to detail and is proof the group will do a great job at restoring the original car.

You can read more about the restoration in my original post or by following the restoration on Facebook or Twitter.

The gallery below has images of the “A” car and of the replica built by the restoration team. The video is the 2011 Nike ad featuring Christopher Lloyd and the replica Time Machine.

UPDATE: A reader pointed out correctly that some of the images presented in the slideshow were of a replica Time Machine and not the “A” model from the series. I have made the necessary corrections.

Back to the Future Time Machine to be Restored

A group of restoration experts have gotten permission to carryout a museum quality restoration of the “A” model DeLorean Time Machine used in all three parts of Back to the Future. On the group’s Facebook page, there is a message from Bob Gale, the producer of the BTTF trilogy, encouraging anyone who has images of the car or parts from the car to contact them.

The “A” model DeLorean was one of several used for the series, but the “A” model was the most complete and used for external shots of the car. Since the filming of the series completed in the early 1990s, the car has been displayed outside in the elements and it has taken its toll on the car. The restoration team, consisting of Joe Walser, J. Ryan and Terry Matalas, have built other BTTF DeLorean replicas and they have the full support of the trilogy’s creators.

What they need is your help. If you have any pictures of the car from your trips to Universal Studios in Orlando, or if you have any of the original parts from the cars used in the movie, they would like to hear from you. You can contact the restoration group at TimeMachineRestoration@gmail.com.

For all other interested fans of the trilogy, you can follow their progress on Facebook and Twitter.

The Whole Earth Blog in 2011

2011 was a busy year for me and for this blog. The Whole Earth Blog began 2011 with a different name and changed names twice before finding one that fit. This year was better than I could have ever imagined for this blog. I started the year with barely 200 visitors a month and ended the year with well over 2,000 per month! I credit this to the expansion of the topics discussed within the blog.

The stats for the year (Views per Month)

I posted on a wide variety of topics from my continuing education, auto news, tech reviews, the retirement of the Space Shuttle program, the Joplin tornado, the SS United States, and tributes to Steve Jobs and Harry Morgan. The popularity of the blog has been on the rise and I am very proud of the variety of posts that I am able to come up with. I thought, to celebrate the end of 2011, I would share the top ten posts of the year. And they are:

10. SS United States: A Ship in Distress

9. The Apple iPad 2 Review

8. Joplin, Missouri Tornado News and Updates

7. Welcome Pottermore

6. Pottermore (Beta): A Full Review

5. Own a Pair of Marty McFly’s Shoes

4. Is the First Generation iPad a Classic?

3. The Legacy of Steve Jobs

2. Who is Laurene Powell Jobs?

1. Graduate School and the iPad

I want to thank everyone for reading in 2011 and am looking forward to 2012 as I complete my college career and enter the “real world.”

Own a Pair of Marty McFly’s Shoes

In Back to the Future, Part II, Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to the year 2015.  In that year we see the future of technology, or at least people in the 1980s thought the future would look like.  Futuristic items such as flying cars have yet to be invented.  One object of interest from the movie has always ben Marty’s Nikes.  Doc outfits Marty in 2015 clothing, including a self-lacing pair of Nike shoes.  Yesterday, Nike announced they have produced 1500 pairs of the shoes, dubbed the Nike MAG 2015, and will auction them off for charity on eBay.  The down side….they do not have power laces.  They light up and are identical to those used in the film, but Nike could not deliver on power laces.

Nike will be selling 150 pair per day for the next 10 days.  All procedes will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to further Parkinson’s disease research.  All money raised from the eBay auctions will be matched by Nike.

Click HERE To find out more about the auctions.

UPDATE: Nike has added photos of the shoes with the BTTF DeLorean Time Machine.  The first set of 150 have been added to eBay and are selling for $4,000 – $5,000, although, they still have 15 hours remaining.
